How to Calculate CTC from Desired In-Hand Salary
When interviewing for a new job or negotiating an annual appraisal in India, salary discussions usually center on Annual CTC (Cost to Company). However, your monthly living expenses, rent, EMIs, and savings depend entirely on the net monthly in-hand credit in your bank account.
The Reverse Salary Formula
Because Indian taxation follows progressive income tax slabs with marginal relief and standard deductions, there is no simple multiplier (such as multiplying take-home by 1.2) that works accurately across different income levels.
PayDecode uses a rigorous monotonic mathematical binary search that tests candidate CTC figures through our complete payroll engine until it converges within ₹10 of your target monthly bank credit.
Why is Required CTC Always Higher Than Take-Home × 12?
To credit ₹1,00,000 into your account each month, an employer typically spends ₹1.15 Lakh to ₹1.25 Lakh per month. The gap consists of:
- Employee Provident Fund (EPF): 12% of your PF wage base (up to ₹3,000/month under the ₹25,000 wage ceiling).
- Employer Provident Fund: An equal 12% contribution borne by the employer, which is subtracted from your CTC before cash salary is calculated.
- Gratuity Accrual: Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, companies set aside 15/26 of monthly basic salary per year (approx 4.81% of basic salary).
- Professional Tax: State-level tax (up to ₹2,500 annually in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu).
- Tax Deducted at Source (TDS): Annual income tax calculated according to Section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.

For ₹50,000 monthly take-home under the New Tax Regime (Tax Year 2026–27), you need an annual CTC of approximately ₹6.6 Lakh to ₹6.9 Lakh. How much CTC is needed for ₹1.5 Lakh in-hand per month?
To take home ₹1,50,000 net per month, you require an annual CTC of approximately ₹22.5 Lakh to ₹23.5 Lakh. At this level, your annual income tax will be approximately ₹2.5 Lakh to ₹2.8 Lakh under the New Regime.
